Conference: Artificial Intelligence and Music
On 20 October 2023, as part of the public session of its general meeting, the German Music Council held a conference entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence and Music – Help or Competition?’ at the Aquino Conference Centre.
The conference provided a platform for discussing future prospects in cultural and economic policy, as well as copyright law. What is the current state of artificial intelligence in music and the music industry in general? How is the music landscape changing, and how are people listening to music? How are professional fields evolving, and which new ones are emerging? What opportunities are there to attract a larger or even new audience? What do concrete project ideas look like with regard to hybrid soundscapes, participation and immersion? Exciting insights, case studies and practical examples were presented by experts in a wide range of thematic modules.

As part of the symposium, the ‘Living Paper’ entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence and Music – Help or Competition?’ was drawn up and subsequently adopted by the General Assembly of the German Music Council.
Following the approval of the European Union’s “AI Regulation” in March 2024, the German Music Council, in collaboration with its then Federal Specialist Committees on Media, the Music Industry and Law, presented a follow-up to the Living Paper.
