The German Music Council (DMR) is committed to the interests of the 15 million people who make music in Germany and is the world's largest national umbrella organization for music culture. It represents around 100 organizations and umbrella associations from the entire spectrum of musical life, including the 16 state music councils.

With its music policy work, the Deutscher Musikrat e. V. in Berlin, as a civil society actor, provides impetus for a vibrant musical life and maintains a permanent dialogue with the German Bundestag and the Federal Government.
The Deutscher Musikrat gGmbH in Bonn is responsible for organizing the German Music Council's thirteen long-term projects.

Competitions: Jugend musiziert, Jugend jazzt, German Music Competition, German Orchestra Competition, German Choir Competition 
Promotion: German Music Competition (concert promotion), Conducting Forum, Podium Gegenwart, PopCamp

It is also responsible for temporary funding programs such as "NEUSTART KULTUR – Free Music Ensembles" and "NEUSTART KULTUR - Scholarship Program 2023."

In 2023, the German Music Council celebrates its 70th anniversary. Founded in 1953, it has become the largest civic movement in the cultural sector. The German Music Council acts on the basis of its legal statutes, the Federal Republic of Germany’s Basic Law, the UNESCO Convention on the Protec-tion and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and is under the patronage of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
