Musikalische Bildung im Ökosystem Musik

Kongress am 25. & 26. März 2026 / Pre-Events ab November 2025

Music is present in almost all areas of life—as a shared experience, a form of expression, and a unifying force. More than a fifth of people in Germany actively play music, demonstrating that music is a central part of social life and, together with all the institutions involved and the music industry, forms its own ecosystem. The foundation for this is musical education. It teaches far more than artistic skills: musical education strengthens democratic awareness, diversity, transcultural understanding, and social bonds. It promotes expressive and perceptive abilities, creativity, and participation—including in the digital space.

With this congress, the German Music Council is committed to raising awareness of music education in the music ecosystem and recognizing its potential for cohesion, inclusion, integration, democracy, transformation, and personal development.

The aim is to gather experience reports and ideas for the congress. This should intensify networking between different areas of music education, which will then be used as a basis for examining the connection between music education and other sectors at the congress. Elementare Musikpädagogik und Community Music - Perspektiven und Synergien (18. November 2025)

18th of November 2025, 18:00-19:30

Elementary Music Education (EMP): Often misunderstood as synonymous with early music education for 4-6 year olds – Michael Dartsch dispels this misconception in his introduction. Community Music: A new branch of group-based music-making that has come to Germany from the Anglo-Saxon world – Alicia de Bánffy Hall provides an introductory overview of developments and goals. How do these two fields of musical education relate to each other, what are their goals, and what does the future hold? Sabine Anni Schmid and Daniel Eberhard supplement and question both speakers from the perspectives of EMP and school music before inviting all participants to join the discussion.

Amateurmusik und Frühstudium: Potenziale entdecken - Begabungen fördern (9. Dezember 2025)

9th of December 2025, 18:00-19:30

The promotion of talented individuals must be understood in terms of developing potential: it does not only concern the promotion of a small group of highly gifted individuals, but also encompasses broad-based support. How is this implemented in amateur music, and what role do state music academies, early education institutes at music colleges, and music schools play in this? Anyone interested in musical education processes is invited to participate in the online exchange. After a panel discussion, guests are invited to join in the discussion.

Durch Vermittlung Räume für Musikalische Bildung erschließen - Wo wird überall Musik gemacht? (13. Januar 2026)

13th of January 2026, 18:00-19:30

Classical music institutions have established music education as a fixed element in their repertoire. Music education often takes place beyond the established and ritualized concert halls. It is precisely this shift that opens up new opportunities for encounters and creates new points of contact with a diverse society. General education schools regularly provide their premises as reliable partners for outreach departments, but connections between outreach programs and music schools or amateur music have been rare to date. Yet such “intra-musical” networking has great potential for anchoring musical education in educational biographies in the long term. In this event, we want to discuss together the opportunities that this can offer.

Musikkulturen gemeinsam gestalten (17. Februar 2026)

17th of February 2026, 18:00-19:30

Have the different types of music from around the world found their way into schools, music schools, conservatories, and universities? Do children and young people feel that their musical preferences are being taken seriously? Or is polarization, such as between a dominant musical culture and the music of their countries of origin, becoming increasingly entrenched? How can we meaningfully address the world's musical diversity in our education systems, and what opportunities does this challenge present? Impulses and a joint discussion will explore answers to these questions.
