Die Edition Musik in Deutschland 1950–2000 dokumentiert auf 122 CDs die Entwicklung der zeitgenössischen Musik in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts auf der Grundlage eines breiten Musikbegriffs. Sie umfasst sechs Hauptfelder: Konzertmusik, Elektronische Musik, Musiktheater, Angewandte Musik, Jazz und Populäre Musik. Innerhalb dieser Bereiche ist sie gegliedert in chronologisch geordnete Gattungsspektren einerseits (Serien) und, damit verflochten, in spezifisch konzipierte Themen (Porträts) andererseits.

Gegenstand ist die Musik in beiden deutschen Staaten bis 1990 sowie im vereinten Deutschland bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts. Neben deutschen Komponisten werden auch Komponisten anderer Nationalitäten berücksichtigt, sofern sie ihren Schaffensmittelpunkt in Deutschland hatten oder ihr Werk für die zeitgenössische deutsche Musik besonders gewichtig war. 

Um dem Umfang und der Vielfalt des vorhandenen Gesamtbestandes an Musik gerecht zu werden, sind eine strikte Selektion und bei umfangreicheren Kompositionen eine Beschränkung auf Segmente unverzichtbar. Die Dokumentation soll Einsicht in musikgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge bieten und zur ästhetischen Erfahrung von Musik vielfältig anregen.

Die Dokumentation wird herausgegeben vom Deutschen Musikrat in Kooperation mit RCA Red Seal SONY/BMG Music Entertainment und finanziert aus Mitteln des Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien.

Music in Germany 1950-2000

Musik in Germany 1950-2000 outlines the history of contemporary music in Germany during the second half of the twentieth century on a total of 122 CDs. Based on a broadly conceived concept of music, it covers six main areas: concert music, electronic music, music theater, applied music, jazz, and popular music. Within these areas it is subdivided into chronological overviews of particular genres ("series") interspersed with special topics ("portraits").

The new publication covers music in the two German states up to the year 1990 and in reunified Germany to the end of the century. Besides German composers, it also includes composers of other nationalities who created the bulk of their work in Germany or had a special impact on contemporary German music.

To do justice to the scope and range of the existing body of music, it was essential to make a rigorous selection and to present longer compositions in excerpt. The purpose of our publication is to shed light on historical connections and to stimulate aesthetic encounters with music in many different ways.
